Objective: This study aims to analyze the fruit production, specifically apple cultivation, in Jammu and Kashmir with a focus on its socio-economic impact on the local population, particularly in the district of Kulgam. It also seeks to assess the challenges faced by this industry and its implications for employment and regional economic growth.
Methodology: The research employs an analysis of statistical data on apple production in the district of Kulgam from 2017 to 2021. Data on apple production, as well as the cultivation of cherries, almonds, and walnuts, were sourced from the Horticulture Department of Kulgam. The trends in production growth or decline were examined to determine the overall impact on local employment and economic conditions.
Results: The study observed a general decline in apple production over the years, with a decrease from 223,893.26 MT in 2017-18 to 206,685.83 MT in 2020-21. Cherry and walnut production showed significant growth in certain years, while almond production experienced fluctuating growth rates. Despite the challenges, apple production remains crucial, providing direct and indirect employment to over 1.2 million people in the region and contributing significantly to the local economy.
Conclusions: The declining trend in apple production indicates the need for government intervention to address production challenges. Implementing modern horticultural practices, improving storage, and addressing market inefficiencies can enhance the socio-economic conditions of the population. Sustainable development in apple production is vital for the continued economic growth and employment in Jammu and Kashmir.
